Question of the Week...

Do you name your vehicles?

I had some fun comments about Minnie-the-van over the weekend, so I thought this would be a good question of the week.

John and I have always named our vehicles, but we're not too terribly clever in the name department. When we were newlyweds, we had a Maxima that we nicknamed "The Max", and we called our Mazda was "The Maz". Clearly, we're very original. We did have a Plymouth Horizon once that we tried to call "The Hor" but that never seemed to stick, and thank goodness that car wasn't around for very long.

Years later, we had a Honda Civic that we dubbed "Little Lou", and honestly, I have no idea where that name came from, but it fit and we loved it!

These days, John drives a black car that we've had for a long time (we keep our cars forever), so it's name is "Ole Black", and when we bought our van six years ago, we collectively decided on "Minnie-the-van".

What about you? Do you have any special names for your vehicles?

I'm even less orginial.....when we had a truck, it was called 'the truck. Now that we have a car, it's called...yup....the car!

no orginality happening here.

We have "Ellie Mae" the Honda Element. We bid farewell to "Blackie" the black mazda minivan last year. I have yet to settle in on a name for our new Honda van.

I named my friend's Honda Odyssey Homer, after...Homer's Odyssey. Then I was bummed when we got an Odyssey and the name was taken.

From recent to oldest:

RHonda-Honda (minivan)

Calvin Chrysler (from Calvin and Hobbes)

Dilbert Dodge (from Dilbert--sadly, I totalled Dilbert on a patch of ice, which is why we now have Calvin)

Nellie Neon (yes, we had a friend who sold Dodges in the early 90s)

Ellie Escort (my first car)

Harvey Honda (Big's first "real" car)

Marty Mazda (Big's college car)

Timmy Toyota (Big's '73 high school car)

Patty Pontiac (my grandma's car-she still has it, and it's an '87)

Hillary Honda (mom's '87)

And...my favorite, our 1971 avocado interior and olive green exterior: Isabelle Vega.

We're on medication...It's all good.

How funny, Mer. Nope. Never named any of our cars. It was all I could do to come up with names for our kids! :-)

What great responses!!! Here's our list...

Black Stallion--hubby's old black truck

HondaNell--my old car in college a little honda accord..

Silver Streak--hubby's sebring that he has now..

Goldie--our favorite, most devoted vehicle EVER a mini van...died earlier this year at the 180,000 mark...

Proud Mary (yes, she had big wheels that kept on turning) a Pacifica that I couldn't hang with b/c I missed a van so badly and then traded her for Goldie II (the name I couldn't attach to) that affectionately became (thanks for your willingness to share, Mer!) Minnie the Van for which I am extremely happy about!!

Hopefully, we'll get her some ears for the antenna when we go to Disney in Sept. I'd love to get you some too!!!!

My brother-in-law had a funky, olive green Malibu named The Green Hornet.

We used to call Wes' old Toyota pickup, Yoda.

Alas, we no longer seem to name our vehicles. However, we did name our GPS navigation system Gertrude.

This is hilarious! I have a small white Honda Civic (My hubby drives it now but I brought it into the marriage! We only traded because it is a 2-door and that is IMPOSSIBLE with a carseat!) Anyway...when I worked in youth ministry my bible study girls named it "The Jellybean." We called it "The bean" for short!!!

Our Honda Odyssey is known as "Ol' Bessie." Usually followed by fake whip cracks and a vocal "yah! yah!" when going up a hill. And some pats on the dashboard for doing so well.

Meredith,
Used to name my cars. Until my brand new Toyota Corolla was totaled out in an accident. I cried over that car and was attached. I thought, ok, no more attachments to cars, so I stopped naming them. I know that is weird, but you know. Golly, I forgot the name of that car! But I did have a friend with a car also named "The Old Bessie Battlewagon".

Noooo... I've never named a car. I'll be lucky if I can think of a name for this baby!

Oh yes!

Let's see my high school car was "Felipe the Fiero" (yep, I had one and LOVED it!). Then we had "the Rabbit" and "the Honda" followed by "the Saturn" and "the Subaru." There was also "the Jeep," "the Suzuki" (Samuri that is), "the truck," "the Golf," and "the Van."

Then we got back into the naming:

Blueberry the old VW bug.
Big Blue the Expedition.
Marcia the Porsche.
Hi Ho Silver the Pacifica.
Little Blue the PT Cruiser.
Snow White the Jetta.
And I drive the Brownie Bus, the Expedition!

Clearly, we have owned too many cars. And I'm sure I'm forgetting two or three...

Well, I didn't know we were gettin' historical here! My first car was a white Nissan Sentra named Blanche. I love Homer and Rhonda for Honda Odyssey names. Might have to steal one of those depending on whether she's a boy or a girl. How do you tell?

I knew you called your van Minnie, which I think is hilarious and fun. I don't think I've ever called a car a proper name besides, like, "Honda" or whatever.

Sorry to disappoint you. :)

This is too funny. who knew so many people named their cars! My college roommate named her car, but for the life of me I can't remember what. She named my Mazda Matilda. I don't think I've named a car since but I do have a piece of furniture named Henry.

We call Derek's Honda Accord "The Cream Puff." I guess because it is old. Ha!

We don't name our cars other than calling them by what they are ~ Jeep, Tahoe, we do have The Truck which is the old pick-up my husband I bought the month before we got married. Still runs, but is one rough ride.

Growing up we had a light blue 1970 VW we called The Buggy. My Dad still has it in fact and I'm on the Title. I hope some day to bring to my house. Back before the days of seatbelts my sister and I could both fit in the VERY back of it for evening drives my parents would take us on. So much fun!

Hi there. Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting. It is great to meet a fellow Arkansas girl. I'm sure my husband would loooove to move to Colorado.

Oh yeah, we have a Kia mini van. (No offense to any kia owner's) but ewwww. I will never buy another. We call her the rolling turd. When I get my son out of the house, I am totally getting me something cool!!!

Oh I love this question. My grandparents named their vehicles so I continued the tradition when I turned 16. My first car was "Loretta." Living in a small town everyone in my high school called that car "Loretta." The first car I remember my grandparents naming was an old green Buick they had that was called "Old Betsy" and my granddaddy's truck was "Molly." Then they got an Oldsmobile and called her "Sweet Thing." My 2nd car was a Toyota Tercel that my friends and I called the "Turdcell." We have had several different mini-vans over they years. Our first mini-van we called "Speeder." Then we had another mini-van that we called "Gone" b/c I did not like it and I wanted it gone. I drove that thing for several years until my hubby broke down and bought me a Yukon for my birthday earlier this year. When my hubby was driving it off the car lot he said he felt like he was driving
"Noah's Ark", so that is what we decided to name our Yukon. It's funny though we have never named any of his cars, only mine. I guess b/c my cars are where the kids ride and we all ride as a family. Great question!
